Hokkaido Searun Char

Guided Fly Fishing – Hokkaido, Japan

March & November – 2 Full Days

Fly fishing  in Hokkaido offers unique opportunities for Kundzha also known as searun, white-spotted char in lower Tokachi prefecture. March through April are two months for anglers to swing flies for these unique char found exclusively in the western pacific mainly in Russian waters. The 2010 Film Eastern Rises introduced a US audience to a Kamchatkan monster known as Kundzha char. Since flyfishing travel to Russia has been suspended indefinitely, Japan’s rivers have become the only place in the world where fly anglers can tangle with these hard charging, streamer smashing beasts.

Salmon smolt are the primary food source for this predatory char. Think streamers, swinging in a soft current, and stripping as the fly falls. Guides provides flies, leaders, and terminal tackle. You’ll need a stout single handed rod #8wt or a #7wt spey or switch rod to make lengthy casts in waist deep water. Pack a selection of sink tips from intermediate to fast sinking tips to cover a variety of depths.

Weather can be unpredictable from snowy mornings to t-shirt weather in the afternoon. Temperatures can be particularly cool in evenings. Get in touch with us for more details about this this unique flyfishing adventure in Hokkaido.

“I’ve known the owners Yoshi and Nagisa since 2011 when I was a hitchhiking, train riding, trout fishing fool wandering across Hokkaido.  Simply said, this is the best fly fishing & hospitality expereince in North East Asia.

Prime Fly Fishing

Early Spring host the most productive fishing for searun Kundhza with a shorter and colder season in early November. We are now booking for 2023 & 2024

The Tokachi

The Tokachi river is home to a variety of species including chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta, cherry salmon Oncorhynchus masou, white spotted char “Kundzha” Salvelinus leucomaenis leucomaenis plus a variety of other coastal and Pacific estuarine species. The Tokachi watershed is the 2nd largest in Hokkaido only to the Ishikari River and her tributaries. Wading is not difficult with a stable gravel to sand bottom. The flow of the river is light to moderate. To access the best points along the river, wading up to your belly is often required. Anglers should be able to deliver long casts over 35” as well as withstand cold morning starts.

This trip isn’t for everyone. You’ll need to be ready to depart the lodge as early as 4am to find the fish when the tide is at an optimal position.

The banks of the Tokachi in the lower section are flat grasslands hedged with elm and birch trees. This river and the nearby river outlet provide cover and sanctuary to teal, canvasbacks, snow geese, and the iconic red crowned cranes. The wildlife and scenery make an excellent backdrop as the sun rises. Work with your guide to get the fly to the correct depth. The strikes can be soft or extremely hard-hitting. Don’t “trout-set” these fish and instead set them as if they were salmon. As a supplement to this trip and time permitting, guides may invite clients to chase early season rainbows in a forested creek a short distance from the lodge.

Flyfishing Strategy

The key to optimizing this trip is knowing when the tide is rising or falling. The evening before, your guide will review the tide chart and advise what time and where to start. Expect to cast long distances, strip and swing flies with sinking lines. If there is additional time, rainbow trout fishing near the lodge is an added bonus.
