Fly Fishing Northern Mongolia – Lower River Taimen Float
Per Angler $ 6,950
Fly fishing for taimen on this float means covering eight to ten miles of water per day in stable and comfortable Clack-a-Craft drift boats. Autumn presents a great opportunity for fly fishing anglers targeting taimen in Mongolia. As the water temperature drops, the natural instinct of taimen, trout, and pike ignites an insatiable appetite to feed voraciously.
Fall fly fishing season in Mongolia starts in late August with cooler days starting in early September. Both anglers and the native Mongolian hucho taimen can sense the change in seasons. Think big streamers for taimen, dry flies for trout, and both for Amur pike.
Taimen will hunt down prey and attempt to pack on as much weight as possible. Winters in Mongolia are harsh. The taimen, Siberian trout, and Amur pike will all be in competition to smash your flies. Not to say the fishing is too easy. At times, taimen can be mysteriously elusive.
Your fly fishing guide will go the distance to decode the mystery and maximize your chances of a hookup. Guide to Client ratio is 2:1 on every trip.

“Swinging flies is a lot of fun but nothing beats the titantic mouse fly. The first strike from even a small taimen on the surface is an incomparable fly fishing experience. Staff and guides always started early and worked late to keep us feeling like a VIP the entire trip.”
“Andy and Mateo are the top of the game in Mongolia with a strong effort to find the taimen and never give up the search. Food is good and camping under the starry sky”
Taimen Float – Lower River
There are no “roads” in this remote section of the river, much of which flows through one of Mongolia’s most scenic national parks. All gear, tents, your gear will be floated downriver by the camp staff. By the time you reach each camp at the end of a long fishing day, camp tables will be set with snacks, beer, and wine before dinner is served and campfires lit.
Fly fishing for Mongolia’s taimen requires a 9wt to 10wt rod with both floating and intermediate sinking lines. Amur pike also occupies taimen territory. Expect sudden strikes from sunken root balls and deep holes. Taimen will generally be in a faster current but not always. As we row downstream, your guide will position to deliver the fly, sink the fly, strip the fly, and get in touch with the heavyweights you came to see. These taimen are big and burly. Be ready for punchy runs around the pool, sudden dives, with aerial leaps at the surface.

Fly Fishing Mongolia
Lower River Taimen Camps – Mongolia
Fly fishing for taimen in early autumn means water levels are stable and clear. Late September through October is prime to time to be flyfishing in Mongolia for taimen, trout and pike on the lower river. Trees and grasslands explode into a splendor of red, green, and gold. The drop in temperature triggers larger taimen and smaller ones as well to feed voraciously. First snows can come as early as mid September with some of the best fishing all year coming at the cusp of winter at the end of the fly fishing season in Mongolia.
Fly Fishing for Native Species
Mongolia’s taimen are predators & renowned for their greedy appetites and explosive strikes both on the surface & beneath. The taimen’s main prey items include trout, ducks, pikes, and anything they can fit in their mouth. That includes canibalizing smaller taimen. In low light especially, taimen patrol the surface, stalking out small mammals, ducklings and hopefully your gurgling surface flies. Mongolia’s taimen provide absolutely explode on the fly, sometimes leaping completely out of the water on the 1st strike. If the taimen misses on the first strike, expect and be ready for a 2nd assault. Some taimen will hammer your fly over and over so be ready to drive the hook home.
“This was my third trip to Mongolia: the scenery was spectacular, with fall colors showing in the larch forests lining the rocky hills along the way; and the fishing was the best ever. In a word, it was exceptional. Our group caught countless lenok, numerous grayling, and 23 taimen up to 55 inches in length. The biggest taimen were caught in white water rapids where the water temperature was cooler and oxygen levels higher than the surrounding water; and the gurgler was again by far and away the winning fly pattern. Five to six-inch long streamers imitating lenok also produced well, but gurglers caught everything from big taimen to average-sized” Tom G.
Lenok (Manchurian trout, Mongolian trout, Siberian trout) grow often around the 20″ range and are often mistaken for small taimen and will provide an intense bulldog fight on streamers and dry flies. Pack your 5wt rod and your favorite foam flies – They aren’t picky. Many of them have never seen a fly.
Amur Pike – Amur Pike -They just hit differently. Mongolia’s Amur pike are the unruly roommate of the hucho taimen. These pike like to hang out in slightly warmer water in the slower pools and and sunken holes in the river. Amur pike can grow up to (28 lb) 12.5 The lesser known predator of Mongolia’s taimen rivers are dressed in silverish olive with Inky black spots These fish charge at flies like a live torpedo from behind a log, rock, or even from under the boat. If throwing big streamers is your thing, these fish are great sport on the fly.
