Do I need Fishing License?
Neither South Korea or Hokkaido, Japan requires fishing licenses or permits. Fly fishing anglers in Korea or Japan do not need to purchase a fishing license. We hope for the sake of wildlife conservation in South Korea and Japan, fishing licences will be required in the future.
Youth Anglers
Non-Angling guests are billed as regular guests. Regarding age limits, Generally age 11 is the youngest we would recommend. If you have an exceptional young fly fishing angler in your family under age 11, we want to hear about it!
Fly Fishing - The "best" season?
Generally, for trout and char fly fishing in both Korea and Hokkaido, Japan, the “best” time of year is late May through early July and again from September to October. Cherry trout fishing in Hokkaido is over by the middle of September due to the early spawning period. Brown trout and rainbow trout can be caught almost year round in Hokkaido.
Fly Fishing Japan
For Itou-Taimen, also known as Sakhalin taimen, prime time action is considered to from late October through early December. The spring window for these fish opens again from April to early June.
For White Spotted Char, also called Kundzha, the season runs nearly parallel with the Japanese itou taimen fly fishing season.
Fly Fishing Korea
Cherry Trout also called “Yamame” or cherry salmon. Dry fly action is considered “Prime” from May through early July. Some great fish are also caught in late August through September. We don’t operate trips during the spawning time. Generally, cherry trout will be spawning and protecting their eggs from late October.
Korean brown trout and rainbow trout – Korean brown trout peak times are late October through Christmas. The window for Korean brown trout opens again from late February through March.
Korean rainbow trout – this is a year round fishery. There are very few “wild” rainbow trout in Korea. The majority of rainbow trout in Korea are non-stream born and don’t reproduce in Korea’s streams. They are not always pretty, but put up and incredible fight with some trout getting up to the 22″ mark.
Winter Months – From late December to the middle of February, everything is covered in ice. No trips are operated in the depths of winter.
For detailed information on seasons, please contact us for more specific information.
