“Swinging flies is a lot of fun but nothing beats the titantic mouse fly. The first strike from even a small taimen on the surface is an uncomparable fly fishing experience. Staff and guides always started early and worked late to keep us feeling like a VIP the entire trip.”

Robert Olsen

“Andy and Mateo are the top of the game in Mongolia with a strong effort to find the taimen and never give up the search. Food is good and camping under the starry sky”

Enzo Ferrara

Taimen Float – Lower River

Fly Fishing for taimen in Mongolia offers ferociously beautiful landscapes for the adventurous angler on this six day taimen float. The sky seems to go on forever at an elevation of 5,390”(1645m.) In the western portion, this taimen river courses through limestone and granite canyons for nearly 200 miles. Between the canyons you’ll drift, cast, wade, and camp amoung high steppe, grasslands in one of Mongolia’s premier taimen fly fishing destinations.

More than 500 miles away (804km) on the eastern steppe of the Khentii Mountain Range, another and even longer taimen & trout stream 250 miles (402km) tumbles through lush grasslands to rolling hills punctuated by high cliffs and Siberian pine forests. High in the Buryat headwaters, explore the world’s first taimen sanctuary on horseback or opt to float the middle or lower sections of this unspoiled river for an entirely different fly fishing experience. Float, Camp & Fly Fish

Taimen Float – Canyon Taimen Camps

After a full day of flyfishing, you’ll float into a stunning camp where the drinks are cold, the fires are warm, and the camp meals are hot & delicious. The next day, you wake up to hot teas or coffee, sit down at the table for a hearty breakfast, wader up, board the boats, to chase more lenok, grayling, and those big burly taimen.

Before fly fishing season gets underway, we establish eight fully outfitted “ger” campsites along the banks of the river. Each campsite is well-appointed and extremely comfortable with real beds, linens, and wood burning stoves in each angler’s tent.

Fly fish and float downstream towards the next camp with professional guides without ever having to shuttle or transfer. to a vehicle. Hot lunches are served streamside with tea,  coffee, or sometimes a beer to finish.

Sleep & Shower

Get a good nights rest in a small but cozy bed in your private ger (tent) that has a water reservoir for washing up and a small storage area for your personal items. There are two beds per tent.

Hot water is boiled at camp and tranfered to a field shower (walled tent) on your request. There is also a private and hygenic toilet at every camp with a screen for privacy.

Camp Menu

Western & Mongolian fare are served three times daily and include fresh vegetables, meats, breads, cheeses, wines, beers with the recipes at camp blending the best of Mongolian dishes with  classic American and European favorites. We pack perishable items with dry ice providing great food through from the start to the end of your trip.

Evening Drinks

Beer & Wine are complimentary for our guests and vodka is also a camp treat at no additional cost to you. Ice is not available once we arrive at the river. Enjoy cocktails at room temp or wait until we return back to UB “Ulanbataar” for a celebratory evening on the town with guides and crew.

Weather – What to Expect

Mongolia generally has good weather with mostly dry and sunny summer days and strikingly beautiful autumn weather. The sunshine in autumn is intense.

Canyons Taimen Camps – Fly Fishing Mongolia

Prime Fly Fishing

Fly fishing for taimen in early summer hosts the most productive taimen action with water levels stable and clear. Late August through September is another prime to time to be flyfishing in Mongolia. Trees and grasslands explode into a splendor of red, green, and gold. The drop in temperature triggers larger fish to feed voraciously. First snows can come as early as mid September with some of the best fly fishing all year coming at the cusp of autumn in late August.

The Fly Fishing

Taimen are predators & renowned for their greedy appetites and explosive strikes both on the surface & beneath. Their main diet is other fish including smaller taimen. In low light especially, taimen patrol the surface, stalking out small mammals, ducklings and hopefully your gurgling surface flies. Mongolia’s taimen provide absolutely explode on the fly, sometimes leaping completely out of the water on the 1st strike. If the fish misses on the first strike, expect and be ready for a 2nd assault.  Some taimen will hammer your fly over and over so be ready to drive the hook home.

“This was my third trip to Mongolia: the scenery was spectacular, with fall colors showing in the larch forests lining the rocky hills along the way; and the fishing was the best ever. In a word, it was exceptional. Our group caught countless lenok, numerous grayling, and 23 taimen up to 55 inches in length. The biggest taimen were caught in white water rapids where the water temperature was cooler and oxygen levels higher than the surrounding water; and the gurgler was again by far and away the winning fly pattern. Five to six-inch long streamers imitating lenok also produced well, but gurglers caught everything from big taimen to average-sized” Tom G.

Lenok (Manchurian trout) grow often around the 20″ range and  are often mistaken for small taimen and will provide an intense bulldog fight on streamers and dry flies.

Grayling – offer great action on traditional dry flies for when anglers opt for a “lighter load” to these mighty Mongolian grayling best taken on a 5wt. Fishing foam flies can be a great deal of of fun for begginer or seasoned flyfishing anglers.

Drift Boats & Wading

For this flyfishing trip in Northern Mongolia, travel in stable and comfortable  NRS made drift boats & framed rafts. The boats are quiet and stable. Each boat can easily accommodate two anglers and a professional guide (up to  900lbs) Boats have comfy swivel seats and large, secure casting platforms.  These drift boats have plenty of storage space for extra rods, camera gear, drinks & other fly fishing gear you need on board.

Guide to Client ratio is 2:1 on every trip

As we row downstream, your guide will position the boat to deliver the fly. The expert guides at Fish Mongolia will coach you to sink the fly, strip the fly, and get the perfect drift to connect with a taimen heavyweight. Canyon taimen are big, beautiful and opportunistic hunters. We pair no more than 2 clients per guide. That means dedicated guide support tailored to the way you fish. Fly fishing guides are rotated each day to allow everyone on the trip to gaint the best tactics of every fly fishing guide at camp.
